3-8-12 S344 - Co-sponsored by Sen Dean Heller. This is the retired pay restoration act. If passed, this bill would allow  reciept of both retirement pay, as well as disability pay. Currently, you must be at least 50% disabled to collect both. Contact Sen Hellers office, and let him know how you feel

------------------------------------------------------------

2-15-12 - The proposed budget is out for this fiscal year, and contains many cuts to services, and rate increases for meds, and tri care. These changes will take effect unless we tell our legislatures to block theses disruptions to veterans benefits.

11-27-11 - Sometime this week, the Senate will begin hearing debate on the fate of 13 American servicemen buried in a grave in Tripoli. The crewmembers of the USS Intrepid have been buried in Libya since 1804, and Sen Heller has introduced a bill to bring these Americans home. Click on the link for your representative, and let them know that you, and The American Legion, support this important bill.

10-7-2011 - The bill sponsored by Sen. Heller, which protects the American Legion from frivolous lawsuits, as well as allows members to pay dues online, has passed the Senate.  It will now go to President Obama for signature.  Thanks to Sen. Heller for his leadership in veteran's legislation.

--------------------------------------------------

10-4-2011 - Update for S 951 - Looks like the Senate will not be able to vote, or pass S 951 (hiring heros act) by the goal date of Nov 11th (Veterans Day).

-------------------------------------------------------------------

9-27-2011 -  IMMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED !!! - With the threat of a Gov't shutdown, once again, our active duty service members are faced with the threat of delayed or no paychecks.  Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas, has introduced the "Ensuring Pay for Our Military Act of 2011."  This would ensure continuity of pay, as an essential service, even in the event of a Govt. shutdown.  (see link for article http://www.military.com/military-report/effort-to-protect-military-pay-stalls)  This bill has been stalled in committee.  Contact your Rep, and let them know to get this bill passed.

---------------------------------------------------

9-22-2011  - The White House is examining raising Tricare rates less than a month after the President addressed the national convention with promises that the budget would not be balanced on the backs of veterans.  Contact our Senators, and let them know our veterans do not support this.

DISPOSITION - PASSED IN SENATE.  This bill has just passed, and while details as of Sept 27th are unknown, we know that the provisions to increase Tricare rates were NOT taken off the table.  There is still time to contact the members of Congress, and let them know to vote this down!!

8-31-2011 PRIORITY MESSAGE - On Sept 8th, Congress will reconvene in Washington DC with a single priority - the debt reduction bill.  One of the items on the table is military retirement.  The consideration is to take it from its current form, and turn it into a "401k" like system.  This must not be allowed to happen.  Our current military retirement system is not a burden to the debt load, it is simply an easy target.  Our veterans, and those affected by this, must be notified, and we must contact our representatives to ensure this is not even brought to the table.

8-5-2011  H.R. 2070 - is The WW2 Memorial Prayer Act of 2011.  If passed, it will allow a plaque to be placed at the WW2 Memorial in Washington DC, with the words of President Franklin Roosevelt's "Let our hearts be stout" speech.  National Commander Foster urges Congress to support H.R. 2070, and allow the prayers inclusion.

7-31-11  With the Aug 2nd deadline looming, Let's take a few minutes tomorrow, and call, or email our reps to let them know to keep veteran's programs intact. Veteran and Active Duty programs should not be considered when it comes to cost cutting, and debt reduction.  I'm sure there will be a lot more "updating" to do once the "debt mess" is sorted out.

7-27-11  HR2383 - This Bill would allow the VA to email notifications instead of using the US Postal Service.  The VA claims it will save millions in postage, and supply cost.  What are your thoughts?  Will it be more, or less efficient in helping our vets?

--------------------------------------------------------

7-22-11  HR2055 - Thanks to involvement by The Legion, and other veterans groups, amendment #564 to HR # 2055 has been withdrawn.  This amendment would have required Vietnam vets to provide additional proof in relation to Agent Orange claims.

---------------------------------------------------------

7/15/2011 - As our webpage gets up and running, our first post to the legislative page is one of great importance.  It concerns the cemetery at the former Clark Air Force base in the Philippines.  In 1991, Mt. Pinatubo's eruption caused the U.S. to basically leave the base, and turn the land back over to the Philippine govt.  For 20 years, the land has gone basically unmaintained.  Volcanic ash and forest growth are covering the tombstones of our fallen heroes.  A small group of retired veterans in the Philippines are working to at least keep the growth from getting out of control, but have no Government help, and very little funds.  Nothing will happen without an act of Congress.  We need our elected officials to know they must put a bill up to assist this sacred ground that we have all but forgotten. Please contact your representative today, and let them know how you feel.
